Protecting God's Children

The Davenport Diocese offers a variety of on-line and classroom-based training in a program called Protecting God's Children. Curricula include human relations, life-long faith formation, children and adolescent programs, and parent programs. **Please note, these sessions are scheduled for 3 hours. Some people are being told the sessions are 1 hour and this is not fair to the people and the facilitators doing the sessions. The attendees then get upset because they were given wrong information. Also, some people are bringing small children to the sessions, others attending these sessions are not comfortable with this. Please try to encourage attendees that this is for adults and helpers, not small children.

We are getting lots of phone calls from people that their school or parish is telling them to call the Chancery to register for Protecting God's Children. This is incorrect. They need to register online at www.virtus.org for the session they want to attend. Also make sure they know to allow 3 hours for the training. If they leave before the session is complete, they will not get credit and have to retake the session at another time. Also, ALL employees and volunteers are required to take the PGC training but only employees and volunteers in leadership positions are required to do online continued training bulletins. All this information is found in the FAQ's on our website and is handed out to all attendees at the PGC sessions.

10/23/07 St. Mary - Albia at 6:30 p.m.

*On the VIRTUS website www.virtus.org when a person goes to register online they can see the sessions that are available before actually registering. This is helpful 2 ways, one so they can see sessions scheduled in the Diocese of Davenport but also for those that are able to attend a session in our Diocese can check another Diocese for sessions. ( ex : for the QC area they could attend a session in the Peoria Diocese which covers - Rock Island , Moline , etc.) If you have a person that plans on attending a session in another session, please make sure they register in our Diocese but then they also need to get a copy of their training attendance certificate from that session. A copy of that needs to go to you in their file and a copy to the Diocese so we can activate their account. If they do not do this they will not show up on your training bulletin report.

Please remember that we do not take registration over the phone so please instruct your people to go to www.virtus.org and register for a session then. Please also make sure they are aware that they need to stay for the entire session or they do not get credit for the session. They should get a certificate and provide that to you for your files.

This is a mandatory class for those working with children or vulnerable adults. Depending on their position in the school or parish will determine if they have to do continued online training or not. If they are in a leadership position they will need to do the continued training. It is your responsibility to make sure they get to one of these sessions, have a copy of their certificate on file, make sure the proper background check information is to the Diocese, report any changes in positions to Virginia or Barb at the Diocese so they can be made in VIRTUS, and review the quarterly Training Bulletin Reports to make sure they are accurate.
